I so excited to be done with block 1! Honestly, I don’t make pieced blocks often. In the past I’ve tried and I just couldn’t get it right. For that reason, when I do pieced block I choose paper piecing. It’s just less frustrating. But….I must have done enough of those (paper pieced) that now my piecing is getting better. Cause this block turned out so close to good. My points are not all perfect but they are so close that I don’t really care.
That doesn’t mean that I didn’t have to seam rip and resew a few times, cause I did. What I found out is, that the smaller the pieces are, the more important the scant 1/4″ is. At first thought, I’m thinking “Scant 1/4? What the heck does that mean?” After seeking advice from the wonderful women at my LQS, I know what a scant looks like. Being dyslexic that visual is so important because I can’t “see it”. I think I might do a post on my thoughts about the scant 1/4 and why it now makes sense later. For now I want to share with you the block I made from Jacquelynne’s free BOM….Maggie’s First Dance.
The center block can be embroidered, appliqued, or just blank. Meaning you don’t have to either embroidered or applique. You can use the center block to spotlight a really great fabric pattern.
I’m going to be working my center block with black work. I using fabric from Moda called Bee Creative by Deb Strain. Then I using fabric out of my stash to coordinate.
Bee Creative must have been a popular line cause it has been kinda hard to find. It has been out for a while but still. 🙂 I was able to get a Layer Cake along with some yards from 5 different patterns. I really like the Layer Cakes cause I can get one of each pattern, each color way. Then if I like particular patterns I can get yards of just those (mostly for the stash) but still have the whole line to work with.
This is such a cute block. I can’t wait to start block 2. Today I’m going to spend time getting it ready to embroider. If you haven’t signed up for Jacquelynne’s free BOM click here. It’s not too late, this month is in block 2. So you won’t be that behind.
