Black and White Blog Hop….Day 1

Today is the first day of the Black and White Blog Hop hosted by Carla of Creatin in the Sticks. It’s going to be a fantastic day of awesome quilters and sewers.

For my project I picked a wonderful pattern by Betty Alderman called Tree of Life. You can get a free copy here.

When I think of black and white, I think right and wrong or good and evil. Which is why I picked the Tree of Life to interpret black and white.

The Tree of Life has different meanings depending on the culture. In Christianity it represents the tree of good and evil. According to what I have researched the term, Tree of Life is mentioned 11 times in the Bible.

I still have some work left to do. I need to finish the embroidery and add the borders.

I hoped to have my project done but December/January was a tough month. My Dad’s battle with cancer ended 3 weeks ago and my motivation has been low.

I will continue working on because I am determined not to have any new UFO’s sitting in my sewing room this year.

  1. This is gorgeous, I love it. I look forward to seeing it finished also. I am truly sorry for the loss of your dad, Mine has been gone several years now and while you do move on, all those memories stay live within you. My heart truly goes out to you. Hugs!!

  2. Your block is beautiful. That is so funny, because I always thought the Tree of Life was the other tree, the one that a flaming sword was placed in front of. Either way, it’s a great interpretation of the tree. Your motivation will return. It takes a while to get past the grief that numbs you and deletes all drive. Give yourself time.

    1. Thank you. There are many interpretations of the Tree of Life. The flaming swords guard the way to the Garden of Eden that hold the Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Two different trees. What those trees look like depend on the culture or religion.

  6. Your tree of life is gorgeous. Condolonces to you in your time of loss, but glad that quilting did provide some relief. I found the death of my parents to be a long process to get to used to the new landscape of life without each of them. Be kind to yourself.

  7. Oh, so sorry to learn about your father’s passing. I pray the Lord’s comforting spirit will be with you and your family at this tender time. Quilting can really be a comfort too. Your quilt is lovely!

  15. I am so sorry about your dad. Life goes around in a big circle. Your dad passed and you are left creating a beautiful quilt, aptly named the Tree of Life, to leave for others in his honor. As long as he is remembered, he is not really gone. Many hugs to you.

  16. I’m so sorry to hear of the loss of your father. I understand that feeling. Mine passed when I was a teenager. It’s tough, but you will get through. Your quilt is gorgeous. I love this and thank you for the link to the pattern. It is a perfect black and white project.

  23. Very beautifully done and I love the meaning behind it. Here’s to hoping that you don’t add to your UFO pile and finish this one – I think it would be worth the effort. I”ve found that hand embroidery helps with many things – including processing loss. You are your family will be in my prayers.

    1. Thank you. After a loss we do somehow move on. I don’t think we ever get over it. I lost my grandparents 19yrs ago and I still miss them a lot. I know they all are with Jesus. That is a good feeling.

Beautiful quilt, sorry about your loss, I lost my stepdad a year ago in January, it was in Denmark, so I flew back when he was really sick in mid January, then 2 weeks later he died and I flew back for the funeral. I know it’s not the same as he didn’t raise me, but I do think quilting got me out of my funk! I had deadlines on some things and quilting is just good therapy!! Maybe think about a small project or something in your dad’s favorite color and start making something he would like?

  32. Beautiful piece. I like your plan for the year of not having any new UFO’s. I tried that in the very beginning of my quilting life and it lasted about 6 months. Will say a prayer in your dads honor.

  35. I’m so sorry about your dad…we all hate the C word and how devastating it can be. It’s hard to get back in the groove after a loss and that’s okay. Take time to enjoy the good memories of your dad. Your quilt is gorgeous and will be such a treasure when you finish it. I love it!
